Online • »Gurre-Lieder« from Schönberg's record collection

Online | Thursday, 28 May 2020 | 7.30 pm |

In 1932 Leopold Stokowski conducted the American premiere of Arnold Schönberg's "Gurre-Lieder" at the Metropolitan Opera House in Philadelphia. RCA Victor recorded the concert on a total of 14 records with a duration of about 4 minutes per side. On May 28 at 7:30 pm, excerpts from this recording will be heard for the first time from the copies in the composer's possession.

The world premiere recording of Schönberg's two-hour oratorio was a great achievement at that time. Repeat editions of this musically extraordinary event are regularly released on audio media. While today's CD allows for uninterrupted playback, listeners in the 1930s had to change the record regularly. With the unprocessed digitalization of Schönberg's set, this experience is preserved. Among the interpreters of Schönberg's "Gurre-Lieder" were Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra with Rose Bampton, who sang the "Lied der Waldtaube”. Schönberg later met the soprano during the American exile and was impressed by her extraordinary abilities. In the live concert on YouTube and facebook you will hear excerpts from the "Gurre-Lieder" as well as from Stokowski's introduction to the work.
