“Forget theories, twelve-tone method, dissonance […]. That I write in this or that style is my private business and needn’t concern a listener.” Arnold Schönberg’s position on the significance of the twelve-tone method was clear: as a technical foundation it formed the structural basis of a work, but had a secondary importance for its musical effect. For musicians, however, the reorientation of the tone set often requires them to find points of orientation beyond the major/minor tonality. The seminar offers an introduction to twelve-tone compositional practice and discusses in the context of the performance practice of the Viennese School what the method means for musical interpretation.
